In recent years, working holidays have become an increasingly popular option for travelers, giving young people opportunities to meet people from around the world, try out different kinds of work, and maybe even find their vocation.
Young Taiwanese can take advantage of the various working holiday agreements between Taiwan and other countries to experience life overseas, while young people coming into Taiwan from abroad can exchange physical or creative energy for free board and enjoy the sights and sounds of Taiwan without having to fork over too much money. It’s not hard to see why this has become such a popular alternative travel plan!
The French say that travel is the best teacher a young person can have, and it is the spirit of this saying that has motivated countless young Westerners to pack their bags and head overseas to work for a while and experience life in another land. Over the past few years, Taiwan has begun to get on board with these “working holiday” plans as well.
In June 2004, the Taiwanese and New Zealand governments signed a working holiday agreement, with New Zealand offering some 600 opportunities for Taiwanese between 18 and 30 years of age to spend a year working and traveling around the country.

The origin of hot dogs actually dates back to over five hundred years in the past. It is believed that hotdogs were made in Germany first and it was definitely not named hotdog back then! The sausage was actually named by a butcher in Frankfurt, Germany as "dachshund sausage", after his pet dachshund. Perhaps the shape of the dachshund, which is a small dog with a long and slender body, caused the butcher to see the resemblance between his sausages and his dog. Thus the name "dachshund sausage" came to existence. How the name changed from dachshund sausage to hotdog is another, highly controversial story.
Douglas B. Smith mentioned in his book that the credit of the name should go to the cartoonist T.A. Dorgan of the "New York Journal". According to the story that Smith wrote in his book "Ever Wonder Why", T.A. Dorgan was enjoying a baseball match back in 1901, when he heard vendors yelling to sell their "hot dachshund sausages". The situation drew the attention of Dorgan and being a cartoonist by profession, he made a cartoon sketch of the whole situation but being unsure about the actual spelling of the term "dachshund", he gave it the name of "hotdog". This is the most popular theory about the origin of the name hotdog.

’Tipping’, ’gratuity’ or ’service’ is handled very differently in the UK and America. It’s important to get this right when you visit each place as it can affect whether the staff in bars, cafe, restaurant, hotels, hairdressers, and the drivers of taxis or buses think that you are lovely, rude, strange, or whether they chase you down the street!
In the UK...
In the UK the reason for tipping is to show that you really liked the service. In the UK we have a high minimum wage, and no-one can be paid below this amount for any work, so when you tip, it is mainly showing politeness to the service person, and to acknowledge that they did an excellent job.
You can tip more or less depending on how good you thought the service was, and the average tip is around 10-20%. So if you loved your new 50 pound haircut, you should add another 5-10 pounds onto your bill, and this will go directly to the hairdresser! If you didn’t like the service, don’t tip! This is the case even if ’service’ has been added to your bill. If you didn’t like the service, you can always refuse to pay. Or if you are a student, traveller on a budget, or simply can’t afford to, it’s also ok not to spend the extra money.
