Shingeki no Kyojin Manga Summary:

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source.

A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years.

Teenage boy Elen and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive.

Elen vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind

這部作品會有如此高的人氣，主要是故事的結構頗新，雖然標題看起來是勵志的作品，但它其實是災難型的故事，動畫才一集就死了一票人，人數多到算不出來。裡面的角色也是還沒熟悉就被巨人吃掉，和以往角色不太會死亡的設定不太一樣。

真正帶起流行的是動畫化，進擊的巨人是 2013 年春季動畫最有看頭的作品，動畫成功補足了漫畫畫工不足的部分，加上這部作品有大量的動作場面，在漫畫中並不容易表現，更吸引讀者來觀看。

另外其片頭曲也是造成流行的重要因素，「紅蓮の弓矢」熱血明快的節奏和歌詞非常洗腦，在 YouTube 上也有百萬級的點擊觀看人數。最有趣的是不少人把這首歌合成到其他的動畫之中，都意外地無違和感，大量的合成影片也在 nicconico 上造成了完全性的流行，在熱門排行上幾乎都被進擊的巨人所佔領。
